This week 5.5.2025 Monday Jazz @ Brother Don’s features the CHRIS BICKLEY QUARTET doing a variety selections the Great American Songbook and Modern Jazz classics by John Coltrane, Art Farmer, Dexter Gordon, Herbie Hancock, Chuck Mangione, Lee Morgan, and more! Chris Bickley has performed at the Montreux International Jazz Festival (Switzerland), North Sea Jazz Festival (Netherlands), Bix Beiderbecke Festival (Iowa), Detroit Montreux Jazz Festival (Michigan), and Carnegie Hall (New York). A graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy, he has served as the Director of Jazz at Central Michigan University and Northwestern Michigan College, and has performed with many jazz legends including Woody Herman and Herbie Hancock. The band includes Derick Polk on bass … Derick grew up on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, and attended two universities in the city: DePaul University, where he earned a degree in music theory, and Northwestern Illinois University, where he earned his degree in music education. His military career took him out of Chicago and allowed him to explore other parts of the world, such as Italy and Japan, and gave him further opportunities for performance and conducting. Derick plays tuba in addition to bass, and listens to a wide range of music, including rock, jazz, hip hop, country, and classical. The two most influential musicians in his life are Von Freeman and Fred Anderson, both Chicago jazz legends. George Radenbaugh on keys … George received a degree in music composition from U.C.S.B he headed to the Pacific Northwest to pursue his real interests in jazz improvisation. He has been playing jazz and other genres with numerous musicians and bands on the Olympic and Kitsap peninsulas for more than 30 years. And Jeff Busch on drums … Jeff is an exuberant drummer/percussionist, vocalist, and composer whose passion for soulful music of varied traditions has led him to perform with jazz, blues, and gospel groups--as well as calypso, samba, and Cuban jazz ensembles. Between 1988-96, Jeff studied fine art, and music in Leeds, England. He studied percussion and drum set with Dave Hassel, calypso with steel drum master Dudley Nesbitt, and later Brazilian percussion with Jesse Bannister. In Leeds he first worked as a percussion accompanist for dancers at the Northern Contemporary Dance School; The Phoenix Dance Company and The Northern Ballet. Now based in Seattle, Jeff continues this work for the Cornish College of the Arts, and for Janelle Keane's Afro-Brazilian dance classes at the University of Washington Experimental College. In 1997, Jeff spent six months in Brazil and studied with a variety of percussionists including Edmilson Costa Teixeira, Gilo do Pandeiro, and Mestres Memeu and Lazaro from Olodum. In 1998 Jeff returned to Brazil and had the opportunity to play and perform with the Jovino Santos Neto group which included drummer Marcio Bahia, bassist Arismar do Espirito Santo, and saxophonist Hans Teuber.
