This week 2.10.2025 Monday Jazz @ Brother Don’s features guest local Kitsap area jazz band Hardcode Quartet. Members of the band are: Ian Jones, a lifelong saxophonist musically brought up through the public schools of Bremerton, Washington. After graduating Bremerton High, he studied under highly esteemed saxophonist Mark Lewis before attending Olympic College studying under director Rick White. lan enjoys the thrill in the art of improvisation and connecting with the audience. He has enjoyed performing in Kitsap County’s Latin Jazz group WEPA for over ten years and continues learning minor Latin percussion under Malo Castro specializing in cajon, congas, and bongos. Not to leave the art of the saxophone unexplored, he leads the group Hardmode Jazz Quartet as an ongoing project to continue learning and developing skills in swing, bebop, funk and beyond. Jaymes Dunlap on bass has had a love of music since his first memories creating melodies while still barely able to reach the keys of the family piano. Alongside studying piano, he honed his ear playing jazz trumpet through high school and into college where his hand-me-down bass aptitude acquired while in garage bands was brought to the forefront leading him to choose his main focus of jazz bass. He hasn’t looked back since and hopes his playing brings listeners the same joy he gets from making great music with greater friends. Joe Rice is a jazz pianist and composer originally from Bremerton, Washington. He studied jazz theory and improvisation with Mark Lewis as a teen, then honed his skills under Randy Porter and Dan Balmer at Lewis and Clark College. When he’s not gigging with Malo Castro’s Latin outfit WEPA or fusion group Mission Drift, he teaches social studies at Bainbridge High School. Harley Trotland is a local Kitsap County drummer who has found himself in many different musical situations over the years. His career started with high energy Rock bands that lead him into other genres such as Country, Blues, Latin and Jazz. He has always remained a student of the music while studying under local mentors such as: Rick White, Mark Ivester, Brian Lilly and Mike Herrera, as well as many other artists. His love for intense drumming landed him a position with the world wide punk rock band, MxPx. That’s where he was able to accomplish extensive tours playing in over 30 US states, South America, Asia, Germany, Switzerland, Canada and Mexico. His love and dedication to jazz drumming never waned as he finds his home with the Hardmode Jazz Quartet.
